At John Septimus Roe Anglican Community School, staff member Ms Courtney Fraser is drawing on extensive experience in community broadcasting to create real-world learning opportunities for students.
Ms Fraser has been involved in community radio for more than a decade and currently hosts Full Frequency on RTRFM 92.1. The program recently featured an interview with Western Australia’s Premier, Roger Cook, highlighting the role of music and the arts in the community.

This industry experience is closely linked to John Septimus Roe’s co-curricular initiative, In the Media. Now in its second year, the program introduces students to broadcasting and podcast production, before providing the opportunity to visit RTRFM studios and observe live radio in action. Students also gain behind-the-scenes insight into studio recording and engage directly with media professionals.

‘The program empowers students to find their voice, tell their stories and engage with real-world media environments,’ Ms Fraser said. ‘It also reinforces an important message: learning is lifelong, and personal fulfilment and professional excellence can coexist.’
The program reflects a broader focus on connecting classroom learning with practical, real-world experiences. Through participation, students develop communication skills, explore storytelling and build confidence engaging with contemporary media platforms.
