Cobram Anglican Grammar School is celebrating an outstanding achievement after Year 8 student, Jasper, was crowned the School Sport Victoria (SSV) State Champion in the 14 Boys 3km Cross Country event.
Competing against more than 90 of Victoria’s best young runners at the Yarra Valley Racing Club on Thursday, 16 July, Jasper crossed the finish line in a remarkable 10 minutes and 9 seconds to claim the state title – the culmination of years of dedication, perseverance and hard work.
Jasper’s journey to state champion has been one of steady progression. Since first competing at the SSV State Cross Country Championships in Year 5, he has continually improved his performances, moving from 61st place in his first state appearance to 44th the following year. Last year, he came agonisingly close to the podium with a fourth-place finish before returning this year to achieve his goal of becoming a state champion.
‘It was really good because I’ve been wanting to do it for such a long time,’ Jasper said.
‘When I won this year, it felt like a bit of redemption for myself… I was really happy.’
A member of the Cobram Anglican Grammar School Sports Academy program, Jasper’s success reflects the commitment he brings to his training. Jasper covers between 40 and 45 kilometres each week through regular running sessions and strength training, balancing his preparation alongside his school commitments.
Jasper also credits his family’s love of running as a major influence. His mum has enjoyed running since high school, while his brother Sam also a Cobram Anglican Grammar School student, has regularly competed at state level and did so again this year, finishing 16th in the 16 Boys 5km event.
Although his personal best time for the 3km distance on a cross country course is an impressive 9 minutes and 36 seconds, recorded at the regional championships, Jasper said the challenging conditions at the state event, including steep hills and muddy terrain, made the victory even more rewarding.
Beyond the medals and glory, Jasper simply loves what the sport gives him.
‘They call it the runner’s high. Whenever I go out for a run, I always feel really good,’ he said.
