Frederick Irwin Anglican School continues to broaden its academic offerings through the development of its Marine Science Program, providing students with a structured and practical introduction to marine studies within the Western Australian Science Curriculum.
The program, which began in 2024 with a Year 10 course, has since grown to include Year 11 General Marine and Maritime Studies in 2025, alongside the introduction of a Year 9 STEM Sail Lab.
In Year 10, students explore foundational concepts in ocean chemistry, marine physics and the biology of aquatic organisms. Learning is supported by access to a purpose-built marine laboratory, where students develop practical skills in aquaculture, including the monitoring and maintenance of species such as yabbies, silver perch and pygmy perch.
Frederick Irwin students also design, construct and operate small underwater remotely operated vehicles (ROVs), gaining insight into contemporary methods used to monitor marine systems and collect environmental data.
Field experiences form an integral part of the program. Students undertake an excursion to the Harvey Estuary to investigate estuarine ecosystems and conduct environmental monitoring activities. They also participate in a Careers Taster Day at AQWA, The Aquarium of Western Australia, supporting awareness of potential pathways in marine and environmental science.
The Year 10 program at Frederick Irwin is designed to support progression into the Marine and Maritime Studies General course offered in Years 11 and 12.
In the senior years, the course deepens students’ understanding of ocean and human interaction with marine environments through practical learning experiences. In Year 11, students have the opportunity to complete open water SCUBA certification and participate in a five-day field study at Ningaloo Reef. In Year 12, students may obtain their Recreational Skipper’s Ticket and apply their knowledge through the design and execution of a maritime expedition, culminating in a full-day boat-based field activity.
The program is designed to support both academic pathways and broader engagement with marine industries, reflecting Frederick Irwin’s ongoing focus on applied learning and real-world experiences.
