Course content

In this phase of learning, the Western Australian Curriculum and Assessment Outline promotes teaching and learning that helps students to develop a broader understanding of the world in which they live. Students are encouraged to explore different ways of thinking and other world views, as they learn to become active participants in the development of their society and the world.

A highly structured curriculum exists for each of the following learning areas:

  • English
  • Mathematics
  • Science
  • Humanities and Social Sciences
  • Technology
  • Health and Physical Education
  • The Arts
  • Languages

The curriculum continues to place a strong emphasis on the development of seven General Capabilities, which include:

  • Literacy
  • Numeracy
  • Information and communication technology capability
  • Critical and creative thinking
  • Personal and social capability
  • Ethical understanding
  • Intercultural understanding

Students will become increasingly aware of the linkages between areas of learning and different fields of human endeavour. While students continue to study a broad range of learning areas, they are offered an increasing level of choice with respect to subjects and electives.
