Students Use Trade Centre Skills to Support Local Industry
Students at Cobram Anglican Grammar School are gaining valuable real-world experience by working alongside local businesses to help solve practical industry challenges through projects completed in the School’s state-of-the-art Trade Centre.
As part of their Technology and Systems Engineering studies, students recently collaborated with local businesses to design and manufacture custom solutions using advanced technologies and industry-standard equipment available within the Centre.
Supporting Local Business Through Innovation
One recent project saw students design and manufacture a replacement cover for an irrigation pump after a local business was unable to source an obsolete component. Using industry-standard 3D scanning technology, computer-aided design (CAD) software and 3D printing, students reverse-engineered the original part and created a functional replacement to house the pump’s electrical components.
‘This project gave students the opportunity to apply their design and engineering skills to a genuine industry challenge. Seeing their work provide a practical solution for a local business highlights the value of hands-on learning and the potential of emerging technologies in manufacturing.’ said Mr Anthony McConnell, Cobram AGS Technology teacher.
Students also partnered with Fallons Bus Service to design and manufacture a replacement plastic trim clip that could no longer be purchased as the part was no longer available. Using CAD software and 3D printing technology, students successfully produced functional replacement parts, delivering an effective solution to a real-world industry need.

Cobram Anglican Grammar School’s Trade Centre was designed to provide students with access to industry-standard equipment and authentic learning opportunities that prepare them for future pathways in trades, engineering, manufacturing and emerging design technologies.
Through engaging directly with local businesses on meaningful projects, students are developing not only technical skills, but also the communication, collaboration and problem-solving skills that are highly valued in today’s workforce.
