Easter is the proclamation of the Church’s New Year when the decorative paschal candle, with the year 2026 on it, is processed into the Church following some rich liturgical rites.
In some traditions a new fire is lit and blessed and, from this fire, the paschal (Easter) candle is lit and this light shared with all as they enter from a place of darkness into light. Through all the rites, the pomp and ceremony, there is a simple reminder to us. We are reminded that Christ is the light of the world and that Christ brings light from darkness. Sharing this light with others fulfils our calling to be a light to the world and, with all the lights shining in the darkness, we can begin to see the big picture as we share in the light of Christ ourselves and really bringing light to the whole world.
At a time of darkness and challenge in our world, with great uncertainty through war, difficulties and dangers, we pray that we may shed light wherever we go and that the shared light will show the right direction for each of us, despite all the changes and struggles within our lives.
A happy, holy and blessed Easter to all.
