John Wollaston Anglican Community School has introduced a new Year 8 initiative aimed at strengthening support for students as they progress through the early stages of secondary education.

Building on the success of the school’s Year 7 transition program, the initiative recognises Year 8 as a critical period in a student’s academic and personal development. At this stage, students are typically adjusting to increased academic demands, changing social dynamics and new responsibilities.

The program has been designed to provide both academic guidance and pastoral care, with a focus on ensuring students feel supported and connected within the school community. It includes a range of elements such as elective learning pathways, digital citizenship education, wellbeing programs and the Year 8 Encounter experience.

Central to the initiative is the appointment of Mr Mitch Jamieson as Head of Year 8, providing consistent leadership and oversight. Working alongside House Group teachers, Mr Jamieson will support students throughout the year.

‘Year 8 is an important bridge year,’ Mr Jamieson said. ‘Our goal is to help students build confidence in themselves, both academically and personally.’

This initiative at John Wollaston aligns with a wider emphasis on guiding students through key developmental stages while equipping them for future learning and life beyond the classroom.
